Care &
Management of Pets in a Disaster
The American Red Cross and the Humane Society
of the United States published a brand new brochure called,
"Pets and Disaster: Get Prepared". This informative
brochure provides information about creating a pet disaster
plan; having a safe place to take pets; recommended pet disaster
supplies; what to do when a disaster approaches; and special
tips for birds, reptiles, and small mammals.
Since pets are not permitted in Red Cross
shelters, this information has been widely sought to provide
public instructions and information on recommended pet safety
procedures and alternatives for pets when they go to a public
shelter.
Pet owners who intend to take their pets
with them when they evacuate should also take the following
supplies:
- Collar with an ID tag and a leash
- Portable carrier (especially for cats)
- Drinking water in gallon-sized plastic containers, dry
pet food and pet's dishes
- A litter box for cats
- Pet's medication
- Health and vaccination records
- Pet's feeding schedules
If pets must be left behind, owners need
to take the following steps:
- Make sure each pet is wearing an ID tag
- Confine pets in one room (such as a bathroom) without
windows but with ventilation and leave some toys
- Provide plenty of food and water
- Leave dogs together if they are compatible, never leave
dogs and cats together.
- Post a notice on the door that pets are inside and provide
a telephone number where you can be reached.
"Pets and Disasters: Get Prepared"
(4pp., May 1996), prepared by the American Red Cross and The
Humane Society of the United States is available from Red
Cross chapters in the United States for $4.25 per package
of 25 brochures, plus shipping. Orders must be processed through
a local Red Cross chapter; orders sent to Red Cross national
