April 16, 2007

By Kristy Baumgart, Epidemiologist, St. Charles County Department of Community Health and the Environment

Please note there is new information almost daily. For the most current and accurate information, visit http://www.pandemicflu.gov, and look under the heading "Monitoring Outbreaks". The USGS site is very helpful in tracking current wildlife outbreaks and news stories. The WHO site gives the most current and accurate lab confirmed human case and human death totals.

Current human death rate from the H5N1 strain is 59.1% ( 291 cases, 172 deaths ).  Three additional cases have been recorded since the beginning of April. The first case resulted in the death of a thirteen year old girl from Cambodia. This is the first human case reported from Cambodia for 2007. The village in which this case lived had known ill flocks of poultry and the girl had consumed a sick bird prior to her illness.

The other two new cases are from Egypt. One of the cases is a 2 year old girl who remains hospitalized in stable condition. Her suspected exposure to the virus is from backyard poultry. The other case is a 12 year old girl who also remains hospitalized. Her source of infection has not been reported. Egypt has had 34 human cases of H5N1.

Egypt has also experienced another human death from H5N1. The death occurred in a previously reported 15 year old girl from the Cairo Governorate on April 10th.
