What's New with the Bird Flu?

April 15 - 30, 2006
Current events and news reports regarding the H5N1 Virus
By Kristy Baumgart, Epidemiologist, St. Charles County Department of Community Health and the Environment

Please note there is new information almost daily. For the most current and accurate information, visit www.pandemicflu.gov, and look under the heading "Monitoring Outbreaks". The USGS site (www.nwhc.usgs.gov/disease_information/avian_influenza/index.jsp) is very helpful in tracking current wildlife outbreaks and news stories. The WHO site (www.who.int/csr/disease/avian_influenza/) gives the most current and accurate lab confirmed human case and human death totals.

Current human death rate from the H5N1 strain is 55.1% (205 cases, 113 deaths). Egypt has reported an additional 8 cases and 2 deaths since the last report. China reports the most recent case on 4/27/06 on an 8-year-old girl from the southwest province of Sichuan. Recent poultry deaths had occurred in the area.

Preliminary reports indicate strain has spread to birds in Russia's Far East region, edging closer to Alaska. This has not been laboratory confirmed yet. Scientists say this could be due to spring migratory patterns and an unusually warm winter in Russia.

Wild birds infected with H5N1 were reported from Austria, Azerbaijan, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, and Sweden this week. Poultry outbreaks were reported in Germany, Pakistan, and Russia. Gennady Onishchenko, Russia's chief epidemiologist, said that Russia may have lost nearly 47% of its commercial poultry to bird flu this year.
