Preparing for an Emergency
By guest author Cameron Satterfield, Public Information Officer for the Department of Community Health and the Environment

Do you have a smoke detector in your home? How about a spare tire in your car? Is there a box of bandages in your medicine cabinet? If so, then you have experience in preparing for an emergency. These may seem like small things, but small things can save lives.

It's a fact: emergencies happen. Whether it's a tornado, house fire, or terrorist attack, we all need to know what to do when disaster strikes. Being prepared for an emergency can literally mean the difference between life and death.

Fortunately, people in Missouri have access to an excellent program to help them prepare: "Ready in 3." Developed by the state Department of Health and Senior Services, "Ready in 3" is an easy way to learn how to prepare for an emergency.

"Ready in 3" includes three steps:

"Ready in 3" includes a variety of materials including a family safety guide, an emergency threats brochure, videos, and more. There are also versions of "Ready in 3" specifically tailored to businesses, adult care facilities, child care facilities, and children. Local staff are available to deliver "Ready in 3" materials and PowerPoint presentation to your organization, civic group, or business. All materials are free of charge, and many are available in multiple languages. Orders can be placed online by going to www.dhss.mo.gov/Ready_in_3 or through the St. Charles County Department of Community Health and the Environment by calling (636) 949-7408.

Local, state, and federal agencies have plans to protect the public, but you are responsible for your own safety until help arrives. "Ready in 3" can help you get prepared now, before an emergency occurs. Remember, by working together, we can be prepared and save lives.
