FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: April 3, 2007 CONTACT: Household Hazardous Waste Collection Underway Collection continues through October St. Charles County, MO - Spring cleaning is underway for many people in St. Charles County. During their chores, some citizens will find all types of household hazardous waste, from old paint to pesticides. Improper disposal of these leftover chemicals (down the drain, in storm sewers, on the ground, or in regular household trash) can be harmful to the environment and pose a public health risk. Fortunately, St. Charles County has a free solution. Residents can make appointments now to bring their household hazardous waste to Recycle Works Central. To determine what’s hazardous, check the product label for the words "Warning" or "Danger." These items should be handled carefully, according to the label, and brought to Recycle Works for proper disposal. Acceptable items include paint, stain, varnish, oil, antifreeze, pesticides, herbicides, gasoline and other fuels, solvents, aerosols, fluorescent tubes, batteries, pool chemicals, and items containing mercury. Unacceptable items include explosives and ammunition, radioactive waste, medical waste, pressurized gas cylinders, household trash, and tires. For a complete list of acceptable and unacceptable items, visit www.scchealth.org and follow the link to "Environmental Services." Collections are for St. Charles County residents only. Businesses and non-profit groups are prohibited by law from participating. Proof of residency, such as a driver’s license or tax bill, is required. Limits may apply to certain materials. An appointment is required. To make an appointment, call (636) 949-7900 extension 4271. Collections will run through October. For more information about the St. Charles County Department of Community Health and the Environment, call (636) 949-7400 or visit www.scchealth.org. [GO BACK] |
