Heat Wave Washes Over St. Charles County

Health department offers advice on coping with extreme temperatures

St. Charles County, MO - St. Charles County is in the midst of a heat wave. Forecasters expect daily high temperatures to hover around 100 degrees for the next several days, with heat indexes approaching 110.

"While triple–digit temperatures aren't unheard of in our area, it's always good to review the precautions you need to take in hot weather," said Gil Copley, director of the St. Charles County Department of Community Health and the Environment. "The best defense against heat–related illness is prevention."

To avoid health issues during this heat wave, follow these tips:

  • Avoid strenuous activity, especially during the hottest part of the day
  • Drink plenty of water, and avoid beverages that contain alcohol or caffeine
  • Stay in the air conditioning as much as possible
  • Wear lightweight, light–colored, loose–fitting clothing
  • Eat smaller meals, and avoid foods that are high in protein
  • Check on those who may have trouble coping with the heat, including senior citizens, children, and pets

Cooling centers have been opened to help those who need it. For a list of locations, call the United Way at 1-800-427-4626.
