After a Severe
Thunderstorm or Tornado
AFTER A TORNADO
- Check for injuries or trapped persons.
- Apply first aid when appropriate. Do not try to move the
seriously injured unless they are in immediate danger of
further injury. Call for help.
- Turn on radio or television to get the latest emergency
information
- Use the telephone only for emergency calls.
- Clean up spilled medicines, bleaches, gasoline or other
flammable liquids immediately. Leave the building, if you
smell gas or chemical fumes.
- Stay out of damaged buildings. Return home only, when
authorities say it is safe.
INSPECTING UTILITIES
- Check the gas, electrical and water lines for damage.
Wear heavy shoes and work gloves as protection against debris
and broken glass.
- Open windows and leave the building, if you smell gas.
Report gas leakage to the authorities.
- Check utility lines and appliances for damage. If electrical
wiring appears damaged, turn off the current at the main
fuse box or circuit breaker.
- If you suspect sewage lines are damaged, avoid using the
toilets and call a plumber.
- If water pipes are damaged, contact the water company
and do not use water from the tap. Obtain emergency water
from hot water tanks, toilet tanks (not bowls) and melted
ice cubes.
- Do not shut off utilities unless instructed to do so by
local officials, or unless you are in imminent danger from
something like an obvious gas leak. Remember that your gas
supply must be turned back on by a professional.
