Recycling programs for residents and businesses have become a way of life in
communities throughout the St. Louis region. Tremendous progress has been
achieved, and we have reached the point where one third of all waste
generated is being diverted from disposal.
The environmental and social benefits
of these programs are generally well known and accepted, but many people do
not realize the important economic benefits these programs generate for our
region. This recent study spotlights this important component of the local economy.

St. Louis Metropolitan Area
Recycling Economic Information Study (pdf)

This study was undertaken to determine the size of recycling, remanufacturing, and reuse (RRR)
industries in the St. Louis Metropolitan Area.
It shows that RRR businesses make a significant contribution to the metro area's economy and
provide a number of economic benefits, including job creation for workers with a wide range of
skills.
The study found that the St. Louis area is home to 1458 establishments performing recycling,
remanufacturing, or reuse activities as an integral part of the organization’s operations. Those
establishments have an employment of 15,776 (including over 900 sole proprietors), annual
payroll of $639,910,000, and annual receipts of $4,911,458,000 that are directly related to, or
dependent on, recycling, remanufacturing, or reuse of materials and products.
