Recycling & Resource Conservation for YOUR school
Did you know that about half of your school’s trash is compostable? Help your school save or even make money while getting your kinds into recycling! Your students learn what can be recycled so they can help lead the school in waste reduction efforts. Follow up visits will be provided to keep your students motivated.
Grades: 4 - 12 Time: 90 Minutes
Waste & Recycling Programs
Caution: Wigglers at Work!
With magnifying glasses, students explore nature and decomposition as they record their observations. Discover red wigglers and learn about the wonders of vermicomposting! You’ll receive worm bin instructions to study the process throughout the year.
Grades: 2 - 6 Time: 45 Minutes
Goggles, Gunk, and Goo
Uncover what’s toxic at home; learn safe alternatives and proper disposal of hazardous products. After discerning words such as “corrosive” and “flammable,” students directly apply what they’ve learning by writing on their desks! The group experiments with common cleaning agents and non-hazardous alternatives made from things you eat. Includes free recipes for earth-friendly cleaning products.
Grades: 2 - 5 Time: 50 Minutes
Krafty Kids
Recycleables from Leftovers, Inc. help turn trash into treasure! Communication and creativity flourish as your group creates one of a kind art projects to better understand the three R's . . . Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.
Grades: K - 2 Time: 25-35 minutes
Recycle Relay
Students compete in “Ready, Get Set, Recycle!” a relay race where they learn to place items in correct containers. This short hands-on approach introduces the concepts of reduce-reuse-recycle. Where does trash come from? Where does it go?
Grades: K - 2 Time: 20 minutes
Water Programs
Project WET, WILD, & PLT
Educators & Scout Leaders...Get certified in Project WET (Water Education for Teachers), Project WILD (wildlife), and Project Learning Tree (forestry) for hundreds of inexpensive, hands-on activities at your disposal! Materials correlated to the frameworks, state standards, and can help meet badge requirements. Check the calendar for upcoming workshops!
Grades: Adult Time: 6 Hours Per Project
Macroinvertebrate Mayhem
Discover how population diversity provides insight into the health of an ecosystem. Macroinvertebrates samples and this active game illustrate how tolerance to water quality varies among different aquatic organisms. Extensions may include survival adaptations, water quality assessment, or sampling and identification of local stream macroinvertebrates for 6-12th grades (2-4 group periods).
Grades: 4-12 Time: 50 Minutes
Storm Water Wizard
Guide a drop of water through a maze of drainage pipes to learn how our actions affect water quality. Putting their new aqua-knowledge to work, students investigate the water cycle, groundwater, and watershed concepts. (Class may also participate in storm drain stenciling activities for service projects.)
Grades: 4 - 8 Time: 45 Minutes
Water Messages in Stone
Students replicate rock paintings and carvings to learn about ancient cultures’ relation to water. Analyze and interpret water sayings to compare figures of speech across cultures and climate zones. The group may discuss or debate the importance of water and its relation to our health.
Grades: 3 - 8 Time: 40 Minutes
Tours
Bring your group out for an interactive exploration of our county's recycling centers and environmental career ideas. What happens after you recycle aluminum or that computer monitor? Hear loud equipment, see mounds of recycled bales, feel the plastic shredded material & more!
