Missouri's first statewide anti-litter campaign is getting underway! The goal is to raise awareness of what we can do about litter and, ultimately, to make Missouri a litter-free state. .
 
Banned Items Banned Items
One provision of the 1990 Missouri Solid Waste Management Act prohibited the disposal of major appliances, lead-acid batteries, used oil, waste tires and yard waste in Missouri sanitary landfills. St. Charles County Government has stepped up to provide residents access to services or programs for many of these banned items:
Appliances: Your hauler may offer curbside pick-up for a fee; also accepted at both Recycle Works locations ($15 fee per item)
Batteries (Automotive): Accepted at both Recycle Works locations
Oil: Accepted at at both Recycle Works locations; service stations or repair shops may also accept oil.
Waste Tires: Small quantities can be taken to Wal-Mart Tire Lube Express for $0.70 each. Please call the store near you for fee changes and limits. Check your yellow pages for other tire stores and repair shops that may accept waste tires for fee.
Banned Items Medical Waste
Medical waste is all waste materials generated at health care facilities, such as hospitals, clinics, physician's offices, dental practices, blood banks, and veterinary hospitals / clinics, as well as medical research facilities and laboratories.
The Medical Waste tracking Act of 1988 defines medical waste as "any solid waste that is generated in the diagnosis, treatment, or immunization of human beings or animals, in research pertaining thereto, or in the production or testing of biologicals." This definition includes, but is not limited to:
  • blood-soaked bandages
  • culture dishes and other glassware
  • discarded surgical gloves
  • discarded surgical instruments
  • discarded needles used to give shots or draw blood (e.g., medical sharps)
  • cultures, stocks, swabs used to inoculate cultures
  • removed body organs (e.g., tonsils, appendices, limbs)
  • discarded lancets

Yard Waste
The best way to manage yard waste (leaves, grass, sticks, etc.) is to keep it on the site where it is generated. Mulching mowers and backyard compost bins can allow homeowners to turn these into resources. Most trash haulers offer curbside yard waste collection, call yours or check with a composting facility below.
