Environmental Public Health

The Environmental Public Health Program protects public health in St. Charles County through a variety of programs, which promote healthy environmental conditions and reduce risks associated with communicable disease.

  • Inspect daycare centers.
  • Inspect body art facilities (tattoo and body piercing) in unincorporated St. Charles County.

  • Provide important information on private water wells.
  • Assist in radon testing and mitigation.
  • Offer food safety training classes.

MOSQUITO CONTROL

The St. Charles County Mosquito Control Program's major objectives are to:

  • Solicit public participation in reducing the health risk associated with infectious mosquito vectors through public education initiatives,
  • Provide information and encouragement to eliminate potential breeding sites in pools and containers around the home,
  • Identify and record potential and historical mosquito breeding sites located in St. Charles County.
  • Continually monitor identified breeding sites within St. Charles County and applying environmentally friendly larvicide where mosquito larvae are present.

The primary goal of the program is to reduce the mosquito population in order to decrease the risk of mosquito−borne disease and nuisance mosquito species to the citizens and visitors of our county. The cornerstone of the mosquito control program is the Mosquito Abatement Unit, whose main function is to determine timing and priority of treatment based on larval control and use of citizen complaints. The program controls immature and adult mosquitoes by seeking out and eliminating breeding sites and by using biological controls and insecticides.

In addition to responding to citizen requests, we also initiate mosquito surveillance before the occurrence of summer festivals and community events.

All residents and property owners can assist by eliminating breeding sites, such as stagnant water collecting anywhere on their property. St. Charles County Mosquito Control is designed to promote a safe and healthy environment for county residents.
